EMDR Northumberland

Invest in your yourself

I now offer EMDR [Eye Movement Desensitisation] to address trauma-based problems; this is especially useful for people who have been ‘stuck’ for a while.

How does EMDR work?

While research is actively taking place, the precise mechanism by which EMDR works to resolve traumatic stress is unclear, in part because we are just beginning to understand exactly how the brain processes intense memories and emotions. However, a number of neuropsychologists believe EMDR enables the person undergoing treatment to rapidly access traumatic memories and process them emotionally and cognitively, which facilitates their resolution.

What do you know about EMDR?

  • It’s not magic
  • It’s not for everyone
  • It’s not a quick fix
  • EMDR is an ‘eight phase’ programme
  • It’s not new; nearly half a century!
  • It’s well researched and is continuing to be so
  • The bit you mostly likely know about is the ‘finger-wagging’ bit; that’s phase 4
  • Before we get to phase 4 there’s an assessment to go through-just to make sure it’s what you need and safe to go ahead
  • Then we’ll look at what it is you want for yourself for the future
  • We’ll look at some key problems you might be experiencing
  • Spend a few sessions using ‘bilateral’ eye movements [side-to side, to you and me.]
  • We’ll uncover what’s stuck in there that’s causing your symptoms
  • We’ll address any problems or pitfalls if any come up [sometimes we are not used to feeling good and we can sabotage our success!]
  • We’ll go as far as we can safely and we’ll do as much as we need to do safely, and no more
  • We’ll finish by checking that you have all you need in place to move forward and if not recommendations for what to do next
  • Your mental health is important; perhaps it’s time to address yours?
